Isle of Skye Photography Workshop
The Isle of Skye stands as Scotland's crown jewel for landscape photography, offering some of the UK's most dramatic and captivating scenery. Located off Scotland's western coast, this mystical island presents an extraordinary diversity of photographic subjects, from ancient volcanic peaks to ethereal waterfalls, each location more inspiring than the last.
Scotland's Dramatic Highland Landscape
Dominated by the imposing Black Cuillins, Skye's rugged terrain reaches its pinnacle at Sgùrr Alasdair (992m/3,255ft). These ancient peaks are visible from virtually every corner of the island, but nowhere more spectacularly than from Elgol, where the full majesty of the Black Cuillins unfolds across Loch Scavaig. Skye's reputation for dramatic weather and unrivalled light quality creates constantly changing photographic conditions that transform ordinary scenes into extraordinary images.
Iconic Photographic Locations
Your five-day exploration encompasses the island's most celebrated landmarks. The towering Old Man of Storr, a 160-foot basalt pinnacle, stands sentinel over the eastern coastline, while the otherworldly landscapes of the Quiraing and Trotternish Ridge showcase the results of massive Jurassic landslips that created these unique geological formations.
The atmospheric shores of Elgol provide unobstructed views of the mystical Black Cuillins rising dramatically from Loch Scavaig's dark waters. The enchanting Fairy Pools offer a completely different photographic experience, with their distinctive aqua-colored waters, natural plunge pools, and hidden underwater arches creating scenes of rare beauty along Glen Brittle's pristine river system.
Additional locations include the historic Sligachan Bridge, where the river creates perfect foreground interest for capturing the Red Cuillins during spectacular sunsets when the peaks glow vibrant orange. Neist Point Lighthouse, perched dramatically on the island's westernmost peninsula, provides commanding sunset photography opportunities with sweeping Atlantic views.
Workshop Experience
Five days on Skye provides comprehensive exposure to the island's diverse photographic opportunities while allowing time to revisit locations under different lighting and weather conditions. The island's renowned dramatic weather patterns and exceptional light quality ensure that each location offers multiple photographic interpretations, creating an immersive experience that will inspire return visits and lasting memories.
Here is a detailed itinerary outlining our schedule. While the itinerary looks fixed, it is really only an indication of the locations we will be visiting and the decision to alter our plans depending on the weather and light will be taken if needed.
Day 1
Sunday 8th March 2026
We will meet in the lounge in the guest house at 6pm ahead of our first workshop meal together in Portree at 7.30pm. This 60 minute 'Meet and Greet' will allow everyone to become acquainted and for the workshop briefing to take place. There will be a question and answer session as well as an opportunity to look over your camera equipment.
The evening meal will be taken in Portree at 7.30pm, just a short 7 mile drive down the road.
Day 2 - 5
Monday 9th - Thursday 12th March 2026
We shall start the day with a sunrise session before heading back to the guest house for breakfast. As we have the entire guest house to ourselves, we have a lot more flexibility regarding when breakfast can be served. After breakfast we shall head out to photograph the rest of the day until sunset, which takes place around 6.15pm.
Post sunset we shall return to the guest house to relax before our evening meal at 7.30pm/8pm. The list of locations that we shall be visiting throughout the workshop are listed below and a decision on which locations to visit shall be taken by the two workshop tutors the evening before.
Day 6
Friday 13th March 2026
