Iceland Photography Workshop - Land of Fire and Ice
Join expert photographers Páll Jökull Pétursson and Mal Crawford for an extraordinary journey through Iceland's most spectacular landscapes. This immersive workshop offers unparalleled access to the dramatic beauty that defines the Land of Fire and Ice.
Your Icelandic Photography Journey
Beginning with convenient collection from Keflavik Airport, your adventure unfolds across Iceland's most iconic destinations. Capture the imposing Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising dramatically from Vik's black volcanic shores, then witness the ethereal beauty of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where massive blue icebergs create ever-changing compositions against the stark volcanic beach.
Frame the majestic 1,500-foot coastal peak of Vestrahorn, one of Iceland's most photographed mountains, and document the cultural heritage preserved in the traditional turf churches of Hofskirkja and Myrdal. Experience the raw power of Iceland's legendary waterfalls, from the thundering 200-foot cascades of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss to the hidden gem of Kvernufoss.
Spontaneous Moments
Beyond planned locations, remain ready for those unexpected moments that create extraordinary images. Whether capturing a solitary reindeer herd traversing snow-covered fields or dramatic storm fronts sweeping across the landscape, these unscripted encounters often yield the most memorable photographs.
Aurora Borealis - Nature's Ultimate Performance
During Iceland's prime aurora season (September to April), venture into the darkness to photograph the mesmerizing northern lights. Watch in wonder as the aurora borealis dances across pristine Arctic skies, creating one of nature's most spectacular displays. For first-time aurora witnesses, prepare for a truly transformative experience.
Expert Guidance in an Intimate Setting
Benefit from personalized instruction with two dedicated workshop leaders guiding just ten participants. This small, friendly group ensures abundant one-on-one attention, allowing each photographer to receive tailored guidance that elevates their skills and creative vision.

Aurora Hunting – We will be out photographing the aurora on every evening it is on show
Here is a detailed itinerary outlining our schedule. While the itinerary looks fixed, it is really only an indication of the locations we will be visiting and the decision to alter our plans depending on the weather and light will be taken if needed.
Day 1 – Saturday 17th October 2026
Keflavik Airport – Skogafoss
All of the workshop participants will be collected from the airport at 3.30pm.
We will be travelling in a large four wheel drive Mercedes Sprinter nine seater minibus and a large 4WD vehicle so there will be plenty of space for luggage, clothing and camera equipment.
We shall head to our accommodation for the evening, the perfectly positioned Skogafoss Hotel. Once we have dropped off our belongings, settled in, we will enjoy our ‘get to know each other’ meal in hotel’s restaurant. If the northern lights happen to show, we are perfectly placed to take the two minute walk to the thunderous 200ft waterfall and capture it with the magical colours above it.
Day 2 – Sunday 18th October 2026
Skogafoss Waterfall – Kvernufoss Waterfall – Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon
The day starts with a pre-dawn shoot at the hugely iconic and impressive 200ft Skogafoss waterfall before heading back to the hotel for breakfast.
Late morning will see us head east to perhaps Iceland’s most popular and inspiring location, Jokulsarlon. Both the iceberg filled ice lagoon and the black, sandy beach with both blue and crystal clear icebergs on it awaits. Sunset will be shot on the beach before moving onto our accommodation for the evening, which will be the beautiful modern Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon Hotel. Our evening meal will be taken in their restaurant while we talk about our experiences from the day.
Day 3 – Monday 19th October 2026
Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon – Diamond Beach, Jokulsarlon – Vestrahorn, Hofn
Today will see us return to Jokulsarlon to capture the beach at sunrise before returning to the hotel for breakfast. We shall then return to the ice lagoon to hone your compositions on the floating icebergs that slowly drift by into the ocean.
Late morning will see us head east to the furthest point of on the workshop to the mighty Vestrahorn. This 1,500ft mountain sits on a black, volcanic beach complete with shallow water for some amazing reflections as well as the beautiful yellow grass that nestles in the black sandy dunes. We shall shoot sunset here before heading to our accommodation for the evening, the wonderfully titled The Milk Factory.
Day 4 – Tuesday 20th October 2026
Vestrahorn, Skútafoss Waterfall, Eystrahorn & Fauskasandur Beach
Today we return to Vestrahorn to capture sunrise before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After check out, we shall venture further east to spend the day photographing the iconic mountains of Eystrahorn as well as Skútafoss Waterfall, and the black sandy beach of Fauskasandur complete with a huge monolith.
You will return to your guesthouse in Hofn (Milk Factory) for the second night as this gives you an opportunity not to have to pack your suitcase up for two nights running.
Day 5 – Wednesday 21st October 2026
Vestrahorn, Hofn – Reynisdrangar, Vik
Today we return to Vestrahorn to capture sunrise once again before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After check out, we shall venture west to the iconic town of Vik, where we will be visiting the beautiful black sandy volcanic beach of Reynisfjara, where we will be photographing the stunning sea stacks at sunset. There are huge basalt rock columns present, very similar to those found at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.
If the northern lights are visible, we will head out to photograph them over the sea stacks tonight as we are staying at the impressive Hotel Kria in Vik
Day 6 – Thursday 22nd October 2026
Dyrhólaey, Vik – Myrdal Church Vik – Reynisfjara Sea Stacks Vik – Reykjanes Peninsula – Keflavik

After check out, the Myrdal Church in Vik that overlooks the town will allow us a few opportunities to hone our composition skills before visiting the towering cliffs of Dyrhólaey near Vik will entertain us until late morning. From here you will be photographing sea stacks on the beach from high up on the edge of the cliff faces. This really is a spectacular place to spend a morning.
The afternoon will see us head to the volcanic lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula, located thirty minutes south west of Keflavik. Here we will find a plethora of subjects to photograph including bubbling mud pools, futurist looking geothermal power stations, a lighthouse, a bridge that spans two continents and some of the finest sea stacks in Iceland.

Mal Crawford
Mal is a North West UK–based landscape photographer whose passion for image-making began during his art college years in his early twenties. Armed with a Minolta 35mm SLR film camera, he spent several formative years exploring light, form, and composition across the natural world. Those early experiences shaped a lifelong connection to landscape, a genre that continues to inspire his creative journey today.
Since adopting Sony cameras in 2007, transitioning from the a300 DSLR to the latest Sony mirrorless system, Mal has continually refined his vision and technical craft. His photographic approach focuses on capturing the artistic essence of a location rather than traditional postcard viewpoints. This way of seeing allows him to uncover subtle, unexpected perspectives, an approach that deeply enhances the experiences of the photographers he guides.
With years of experience assisting on workshops and leading photo tour participants in the field, Mal brings a calm, supportive teaching style to every trip. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge, experience, and thoughtful creative mindset with others, helping photographers of all levels grow their skills while discovering fresh, expressive ways to interpret the landscapes they encounter.
