Exertion Level
Medium – We will not be doing any long hikes throughout this tour, however some locations can only be reached on foot, and can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes depending on pace. Some of these hikes are at an altitude of around 2250 meters above sea level (7400 Feet), this is where we will shoot the majority of our Astro images, high above the clouds. Some of the hikes pass through terrain that can be rough, steep, or uneven. These sections require good fitness, balance, and mobility and there may be some mild rock scrambling needed to reach some of the coastal locations.
Tenerife Astrophotography Workshop with Sam Scicluna
Discover the extraordinary beauty of Tenerife's volcanic landscapes and pristine dark skies on this exclusive astrophotography adventure. This unique opportunity combines dramatic geological formations, protected night skies, and expert guidance to create an unforgettable photographic experience.
Why Tenerife?
The largest of Spain's Canary Islands offers an unparalleled combination of natural wonders. Rising majestically from the Atlantic Ocean off the West African coast, Tenerife is crowned by Mount Teide - Spain's highest peak and a dormant volcano that dominates the island's skyline. While many know Tenerife for its vibrant Carnaval de Santa Cruz, the island has emerged as a premier destination for astrophotographers, thanks to its protected dark sky designation and the prestigious Teide Observatory.
The island's high-altitude desert environment provides exceptional atmospheric conditions, ensuring crystal-clear views of the cosmos above volcanic rock formations that have been sculpted over millennia.
Your Journey
Your adventure begins the moment you land at Tenerife Norte Airport, where you'll be transported directly to your comfortable 4-star accommodation in Puerto de la Cruz for a five-night stay. From this base, you'll explore the island's most photographically rewarding locations.
Featured Locations
Teide National Park serves as the crown jewel of your itinerary, home to the iconic Roque Cinchado - a striking volcanic rock formation that has become emblematic of Tenerife itself. This UNESCO World Heritage site provides a dramatic foreground for celestial photography.
Additional locations may include:
La Crucita - offering unique geological perspectives
La Tarta - distinctive layered rock formations
La Cathedral - towering volcanic spires
Las Minas - ancient mining landscapes with rich textures
The Ultimate Night Sky Experience
The highlight of your workshop will be photographing the Milky Way above the Teide Observatory, positioned 2,390 metres above sea level. This facility houses Europe's premier solar telescopes and provides an extraordinary subject for your night sky compositions. The combination of cutting-edge astronomical equipment silhouetted against star-filled skies creates truly spectacular photographic opportunities.
Small Group Learning Experience
This workshop is intentionally limited to just six participants, ensuring personalized attention and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Sam Scicluna provides extensive one-on-one instruction, helping you master the technical and creative aspects of astrophotography while capturing images that will serve as lasting memories of this remarkable destination.
Whether you're drawn by the dramatic volcanic landscapes, the pristine night skies, or the opportunity to refine your astrophotography skills, this Tenerife workshop offers an experience that will stay with you long after you return home.
We will be based in the seaside town of Puerto de la Cruz, so we are ideally positioned to reach all the best locations in a relatively short amount of time. As a result of this, we will not have a fixed itinerary, but will go to each location based on the weather and conditions at the time, looking for the best light and weather to give us great images.
Note: The photo tour will involve an intense five nights of photography throughout the night hours, so make sure you are well rested before the start of the tour!

Sam Scicluna
Sam was born and raised on the island of Malta, where his love for seascapes and the outdoors began. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the island, he developed a special bond with the sea, making seascapes his natural comfort zone and the starting point for his photography journey. Being immersed in nature from an early age helped shape his eye for composition, light, and atmosphere.
With no mountains in Malta, Sam’s curiosity and passion for landscapes led him to travel further afield. In 2016, he realized a lifelong dream by visiting Iceland, where the ethereal vistas and dramatic scenery deepened his love for landscape photography. These travels have given him the chance to explore a wide variety of locations, continually honing his skills and learning new techniques along the way.
Sam is also drawn to the night sky and astrophotography, often experimenting while camping under the stars. He enjoys taking the time to appreciate the world around him and finds great satisfaction in helping others do the same, guiding photographers to see and capture the beauty of nature through their own cameras.
You will have five nights accommodation in the beautiful 4 star hotel AF Valle Orotava, based in Puerto de la Cruz.Â
