Iceland Photography Workshop - Capturing the Land of Fire and Ice

Discover the raw, otherworldly beauty of Iceland alongside expert photographers Páll Jökull Pétursson and Mal Crawford. This extraordinary workshop offers an immersive journey through one of Earth's most dramatic landscapes, where volcanic forces and ancient ice create scenes of unparalleled natural wonder.

Your Icelandic Adventure Begins

Your photographic odyssey commences with convenient airport collection at Keflavik, launching you directly into Iceland's most spectacular destinations. Experience the dramatic contrast of the iconic Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from Vik's black volcanic shores, then witness the ethereal beauty of Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, where massive blue icebergs drift silently across mirror-like waters before washing onto the diamond-scattered black beach.

Iconic Landscapes and Hidden Gems

Capture the imposing majesty of Vestrahorn, a 1,500-foot coastal mountain that creates one of Iceland's most photographed silhouettes. Document the architectural charm of traditional turf churches at Hofskirkja and Myrdal, testament to Iceland's rich cultural heritage. Frame the thundering power of legendary waterfalls including the mighty 200-foot cascades of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, plus the hidden treasure of Kvernufoss waterfall.

Spontaneous Photographic Opportunities

Beyond planned destinations, remain ready for those magical, unscripted moments that define exceptional landscape photography. Whether encountering a solitary reindeer herd traversing snow-laden fields or witnessing dramatic storm fronts sweeping across the terrain, these spontaneous encounters often yield the most memorable images.

Aurora Borealis - Nature's Greatest Light Show

Experience the crown jewel of Iceland's natural phenomena during the prime aurora season (September to April). Under expert guidance, venture into the darkness to photograph the mesmerizing northern lights as they dance across pristine Arctic skies. For those witnessing their first full aurora display, prepare for one of nature's most transformative experiences.

Expert Guidance

Benefit from the combined expertise of two dedicated workshop leaders in an intimate setting limited to just seven participants. This small group format ensures abundant personalized instruction, allowing for tailored guidance that addresses individual skill levels and creative goals.

Lasting Memories Await

Iceland's extraordinary landscapes will leave an indelible mark on both your photography portfolio and your soul. Join us for this unforgettable journey through a land where fire meets ice, creating some of the planet's most spectacular photographic opportunities.

Aurora Hunting – We will be out photographing the aurora on every evening it is on show

Here is a detailed itinerary outlining our schedule. While the itinerary looks fixed, it is really only an indication of the locations we will be visiting and the decision to alter our plans depending on the weather and light will be taken if needed.

Day 1 – Monday 9th February 2026
Keflavik Airport – Skogafoss
All seven workshop participants will be collected from the airport at 3.30pm.

We will be travelling in a large four wheel drive Mercedes Sprinter nine seater minibus so there will be plenty of space for luggage, clothing and camera equipment.

We shall head to our accommodation for the evening, the perfectly positioned Skogafoss Hotel. Once we have dropped off our belongings, settled in, we will enjoy our ‘get to know each other’ meal in hotel’s restaurant. If the northern lights happen to show, we are perfectly placed to take the two minute walk to the thunderous 200ft waterfall and capture it with the magical colours above it.

Day 2 – Tuesday 10th February 2026
Skogafoss Waterfall – Kvernufoss Waterfall – Diamond Beach Jokulsarlon
The day starts with a pre-dawn shoot at the hugely iconic and impressive 200ft Skogafoss waterfall before heading back to the hotel for breakfast.

Late morning will see us head east to perhaps Iceland’s most popular and inspiring location, Jokulsarlon. Both the iceberg filled ice lagoon and the black, sandy beach with both blue and crystal clear icebergs on it awaits. Sunset will be shot on the beach before moving onto our accommodation for the evening, which will be the beautiful modern Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon Hotel. Our evening meal will be taken in their restaurant while we talk about our experiences from the day.

Day 3 – Wednesday 11th February 2026
Jokulsarlon Ice Lagoon – Diamond Beach, Jokulsarlon – Vestrahorn, Hofn
Today will see us return to Jokulsarlon to capture the beach at sunrise before returning to the hotel for breakfast. We shall then return to the ice lagoon to hone your compositions on the floating icebergs that slowly drift by into the ocean.

Late morning will see us head east to the furthest point of on the workshop to the mighty Vestrahorn. This 1,500ft mountain sits on a black, volcanic beach complete with shallow water for some amazing reflections as well as the beautiful yellow grass that nestles in the snow covered sandy dunes. We shall shoot sunset here before heading to our accommodation for the evening, the wonderfully titled The Milk Factory.

Day 4 – Thursday 12th February 2026
Vestrahorn, Skútafoss Waterfall, Eystrahorn & Fauskasandur Beach
Today we return to Vestrahorn to capture sunrise before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After check out, we shall venture further east to spend the day photographing the iconic mountains of Eystrahorn as well as Skútafoss Waterfall, and the black sandy beach of Fauskasandur complete with a huge monolith.

You will return to your guesthouse in Hofn (Milk Factory) for the second night as this gives you an opportunity not to have to pack your suitcase up for two nights running.

Day 5 – Friday 13th February 2026
Vestrahorn, Hofn – Reynisdrangar, Vik
Today we return to Vestrahorn to capture sunrise once again before returning to the hotel for breakfast. After check out, we shall venture west to the iconic town of Vik, where we will be visiting the beautiful black sandy volcanic beach of Reynisfjara, where we will be photographing the stunning sea stacks at sunset. There are huge basalt rock columns present, very similar to those found at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.

If the northern lights are visible, we will head out to photograph them over the sea stacks tonight as we are staying at the Skogafoss Hotel near Vik once again.

Day 6 – Saturday 14th February 2026
Dyrhólaey, Vik – Myrdal Church Vik – Reynisfjara Sea Stacks Vik – Reykjanes Peninsula – Keflavik
Sunrise will be spent photographing the iconic sea stacks of Reynisfjara before breakfast in the hotel.

After check out, the Myrdal Church in Vik that overlooks the town will allow us a few opportunities to hone our composition skills before visiting the towering cliffs of Dyrhólaey near Vik will entertain us until late morning. From here you will be photographing sea stacks on the beach from high up on the edge of the cliff faces. This really is a spectacular place to spend a morning.

The afternoon will see us head to the volcanic lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula, located thirty minutes south west of Keflavik. Here we will find a plethora of subjects to photograph including bubbling mud pools, futurist looking geothermal power stations, a lighthouse, a bridge that spans two continents and some of the finest sea stacks in Iceland.

After sunset, we shall check into our final accommodation for the workshop, the beautiful Aurora Hotel opposite Keflavik Airport.

Day 7 – Sunday 15th February 2026
Departure Keflavik Airport
It is an early flight home to reflect on what will be a trip of a lifetime. If you have always promised yourself a photography holiday of a lifetime, this one will take some beating. We hope you can join us.

Mal Crawford: Photographer

Mal Crawford

Mal is a North West UK–based landscape photographer whose passion for image-making began during his art college years in his early twenties. Armed with a Minolta 35mm SLR film camera, he spent several formative years exploring light, form, and composition across the natural world. Those early experiences shaped a lifelong connection to landscape, a genre that continues to inspire his creative journey today.

Since adopting Sony cameras in 2007, transitioning from the a300 DSLR to the latest Sony mirrorless system, Mal has continually refined his vision and technical craft. His photographic approach focuses on capturing the artistic essence of a location rather than traditional postcard viewpoints. This way of seeing allows him to uncover subtle, unexpected perspectives, an approach that deeply enhances the experiences of the photographers he guides.

With years of experience assisting on workshops and leading photo tour participants in the field, Mal brings a calm, supportive teaching style to every trip. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge, experience, and thoughtful creative mindset with others, helping photographers of all levels grow their skills while discovering fresh, expressive ways to interpret the landscapes they encounter.
