Exertion Level
Easy – All locations within half a mile from the car, some much closer. Some slippery rocks on the water's edge and uneven ground and sandy beaches present. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required.

Lofoten Winter Photography Workshop
The Lofoten Islands stand among the world's premier destinations for dramatic mountain and seascape photography. During winter, this Arctic archipelago transforms into an extraordinary landscape where 3,000-foot peaks rise directly from the Norwegian Sea, their snow-covered summits creating breathtaking contrasts against dark waters and stormy skies.

Winter's Photographic Paradise
Lofoten's winter transformation creates unparalleled photographic opportunities. The iconic red rorbuer (traditional fishermen's cabins) provide vibrant focal points against the monochromatic winter landscape, while the interconnected islands linked by dramatic bridges offer endless compositional possibilities. Snow blankets the entire region, creating a pristine winter wonderland that enhances every photographic element.

Optimal Winter Light Conditions
January's unique lighting conditions make this the ideal time for landscape photography in Lofoten. While sunrise occurs around 9:35 AM and sunset by 3:00 PM, the extended golden hour begins two hours before sunrise, and blue hour continues for two hours after sunset. This creates approximately nine hours of exceptional shooting light daily, with the sun maintaining a low angle throughout, producing sublime, ethereal illumination that transforms ordinary scenes into extraordinary images.

Strategic Location and Accommodation
All photographic locations lie within 15-60 minutes of our base near Reine, with most accessible in under 30 minutes. This strategic positioning maximizes photography time while minimizing travel.

Our accommodation for this tour is the beautifully presented and homely Lofoten Planet Boutique Hotel in Sørvågen near Reine. You will have your own private sound insulated and peaceful double room with a shared bathroom (as is the norm in Lofoten), and there is a 14 seat dining table and a lovely spacious communal lounge, and a fully equipped kitchen.

We provide a continental breakfast, while lunch and evening meals are not included. Lunch is typically a sandwich and a coffee at a cafe/service station and the evenings are spent at local restaurants where exceptional Nordic cuisine is available at reasonable prices.

Aurora Photography Opportunities
Weather permitting, dedicated northern lights photography sessions are scheduled every evening when aurora activity is predicted, providing optimal opportunities to capture one of nature's most spectacular displays against Lofoten's dramatic landscape.

Aurora Hunting - We will be out photographing the aurora on every evening it is on show

Chris Frost: Photographer

Chris Frost

Chris discovered his passion for photography later in life, sparked during a honeymoon trip to Japan and cemented in 2012 when he first picked up a landscape camera. Drawn to the genre’s blend of beauty, drama, and creative challenge, he quickly developed a deep appreciation for the natural world and the stories it reveals through light and weather.

Living just moments from Dorset’s iconic Jurassic Coast, Chris initially focused on capturing its wild, untamed seascapes, scenes shaped by dynamic tides, shifting skies, and rugged geology. In more recent years, this love for stormy coastlines has been balanced by an equal fascination with Dorset’s quieter side: its hidden woodlands, delicate seasonal displays, and atmospheric treescapes.

Specialising in evocative images of the South West, Chris brings a unique blend of patience, technical understanding, and artistic intuition to his work. His distinctive style has earned national recognition, including winning UK Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2020 and placing runner-up in the Wildflowers category of the International Garden Photographer of the Year. Today, he shares his knowledge and passion through guiding, helping photographers of all levels capture the landscapes they’ve always dreamed of.
